Supercar written off after catching fire in M54 crash

A supercar was written off after it crashed and burst into flames during rush hour motorway traffic.

Delays of up to 70 minutes were reported on the M54 after the crash, which involved a McLaren, priced about £230,000 new.

The smash blocked the eastbound carriageway between junctions two and three, near Cosford and Wolverhampton.

National Highways said officers from the Central Motorway Police Group attended the scene about 07:50 GMT.

The closure was reduced to one lane at 08:10 and all lanes were reopened shortly after 09:00.

Police originally said the car was a Lamborghini, but photos supplied confirmed it was a McLaren.

He was taken to New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: “We were called to the M54 eastbound from J2 to J3 at around 07:25 GMT this morning, following a single-vehicle collision.”

The force added that there were not thought to be any serious injuries.
